Product Development

• Research has been conducted and proposals drafted for improving aviation, customs and immigration services. Meetings have also been held with national civil aviation authorities aimed at promoting the development of regional aviation policy.

• Mundo Maya Sustainable Development Program: Initiated in March 2000 with funding and technical assistance from the Inter-American Development Bank, provided US$2.7 million of funding for the creation of the Permanent Technical Unit; identification of priority investment projects; and creation of a range of community-based development initiatives and investment promotion programs.

The aim of the program is to promote the sustainable development of the region’s tourism potential and it’s cultural and environmental patrimony. Projects include the rehabilitation of archaeological and historic sites, development of basic and tourism-related infrastructure, and protection of the environment. Local communities are involved in every phase of program design and implementation.
